FOLLOWING WIND

Please check out my show at Cedar Street Galleries. It will be up until Feb. 25, 2019. There are
45 paintings on display in the upstairs gallery space along with sculptures by Amber
Aguirre from Hawaii Island.

You may know me through my prints, watercolors or sculptures and so I would love to
share this body of work which has been in process for at least the last 20 years. Please
allow me to draw you into my methods.

A composition, any composition is at heart a series of movements, a drawing really that
picks up information and inflection along the way. I see myself as a performer, a dancer
and a magician. The essential metaphor that I see in my work is that of a vessel, a
container that can be set into motion and take me to places that are exciting both
physically and mentally. A painting is a low relief sculpture, a sculpture is a high relief
painting. And everything is drawing, being pulled along by the unfolding compositions.
It may look like abstract art to you but to me it is all narrative, telling stories of
relationships.

Many of the pieces in this show are grouped into sets. They can work independently, but
are best understood as a group. The show is really an installation, an environment of art
that moves in multiple directions.

Suggestion is my password. It is not so important that you know precisely what you are
looking at, only that it is absolutely real and believable. You should feel that you have a
welcome guest in your house that will charm you with his wit and eloquence.

Being a practicing artist for my entire adult life, means many things. Foremost, I see a lot,
I look a lot and listen a lot . There is no denying the ugliness in the world, and perhaps
even the hopelessness of it all. But it is just as true that beauty is everywhere, stunning
and inspiring beauty. So, I ask myself should I look at the bad or the good? Well, maybe I
can fix the problem of having to choose between them.

For example, is muddy color bad? Maybe not if it is juxtaposed with some clean, clear
color. Qualities are neutral, it is only in context that we attach preferences to them.
Can you see how this starts to become a narrative? Composing is like having a
conversation. And it doesn’t take long to read all kinds of issues into shapes, lines and
colors.

I want you to be drawn into the work, to be attracted to the story line of the
compositions. Everything I have learned about art from schooling (BFA, Painting, MFA
Printmaking,) study abroad (years in France ,Italy, England, Japan, South America and
USA, as well as a passionate devotion to teaching for more than 40 years has led me to
this place.

Can it save the world? It is not too soon to be looking around for some new ideas.
