Double Up

This work is based on the idea that compositions are made up of dialogues between their parts. There are really two elements, a left side and a right side that are in a sense in opposition to each other, or rather that show two sides of the same coin. First, one leads and immediately the other one follows, like in a game of ping-pong. The two sides keep exchanging blows until there is an equilibrium reached where there is only one piece in balance and in harmony.

This back and forth game has been going on for many months  where the original image may be completely obscured but without which none of the subsequent layers would have happened. The aim is to discover the art in the tension created by juxtaposing opposites. It is a dynamic balance that I am looking for. I am interested in somehow creating a pulse, a kind of rhythmical breathing of the surfaces that seems to make the work alive. The panels are carved and alternately layered with acrylic paints and paper collage. Some are also treated with lacquer colors.
